2023 Season Review

The 2023 season ended at the right place (Purdue University), but the team had a goal to win a 3rd straight state championship, and fell short by one run in the state title game.

The regular season played out as many have come to expect, the Royals scored plenty of runs, limited their opponents offense, and piled up a third straight 30-plus win season by the time it was all said and done. Along the way, they would claim both the Circle City Conference and Marion County titles, as well as victories over 1A state champion Tecumseh, 3A runners-up Tri-West. The wins continued over traditional powerhouses like Center Grove, Franklin Central, New Palestine, Shelbyville and Floyd Central as well.

This group was even more connected at the end of the season. Roles were established, the players were healthy, and were playing very consistent ball which was clearly on display throughout the tournament. The Royals steamrolled their way through the sectional, outscoring their three opponents 37-0. The regional round was a re-match against Avon (one of just three regular season losses) and a 9-1 victory. Semi-state Saturday started with a 16-1 win over Evansville North in the morning, and ended with a 8-0 win over Pendleton Heights that evening. Pitching and defense ruled for a majority of the state championship game. Senior Keagan Rothrock would put the Royals on the board and tie the game at one with a 7th inning home run, but Penn would prevail 2-1 in 9 innings. Senior Abbey Hofmann would be named as the winner of the 4A Mental Attitude Award.

While the team may have fallen short of their ultimate goal, overall they achieved most of their goals and the class of 2023 set the bar very high for the future of Roncalli Softball – they did it the right way!
