Girls Cross Country

2023 Season Review

The girls cross country team had a great season with one of the best teams in school history! During the regular season, the Lady Royals won titles at the Pike Hokum Karem and Greensburg Invite. They also were in the top 3 in six of their seven regular season races. The team’s average time (the average of the top 5 girls racing) placed them in the top 10 all-time fastest times in program history–within seven different races. This year’s team now holds the top 5 fastest average team times in school history. They capped off the season with the team advancing to sectionals and two individuals qualifying for the state meet for the first time in 16 years.

The JV cross country girls had a fantastic season as well! They won the Greensburg meet and came in 2nd in JV County. The girls worked hard all season, and they have a bunch of girls returning that will be fighting for a spot on varsity next year.

Sophomore Charlie Fletter ran the fastest time by a sophomore in program history and currently ranks #3 on the all-time top 20. Freshman Tessa Mize ran the fastest time by a freshman in program history and currently ranks #2 on the all-time top 20. Sophomore Ava Shirley ran the second fastest time by a sophomore time and currently ranks #4 on the all-time top 20. Sophomore Madelyn Kitchens ran the fourth fastest sophomore time and ranks #7 on the all-time top 20. Senior Valeria Lara finished her career as the 11th fastest runner in program history.

Tessa Mize and Ava Shirley both earned All-Circle City Conference honors, All-County, All-Sectional and qualified for state! Charlie Fletter earned All-County honors. Madelyn Kitchens and Valeria Lara earned All-Sectional honors. Senior Amelia Shirley and junior Rachel Flick were named Academic All-State by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCC). Amelia Shirley was also named Academic All- State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls in Sports Association

Junior Rachel Flick was given the Leadership Award this year, while sophomore Ava Shirley earned the team’s mental attitude award. Freshman Tessa Mize was named the team’s MVP for the season. Junior Anna Rosario was given the Sportsmanship Award.

From Coach Kitchens R’01 and the entire coaching staff, “Thank you to our seniors, Amelia Shirley, Valeria Lara, Megan Perkins and Alison Lewis, for a fantastic four years…we will miss you all next season!”
